Bauhaus-style geometric grid suggesting a Contexto strategy cheat sheet with ranked zones.

This Contexto cheat sheet is a quick strategy guide you keep next to the puzzle. In about 30 seconds you get a ranks chart, a short opener list, mid-game and late-game rules, and recovery moves for when the board goes cold. It speeds you up. It leaves today's secret word alone.

Contexto for iPhone is a meaning-based secret word game. You guess whole words. AI ranks each guess by how close it is in meaning. Lower is closer. Rank #1 is the answer. A spoiler ruins the fun. A tight sheet keeps the puzzle whole while you play smarter.

Contexto cheat sheet: ranks chart

Treat every number as a direction. For the fuller guide, read what Contexto numbers mean.

Zone Typical rank What it means Next move
Cold 150+ Off the map or a distant idea Switch to a new broad category
Warm 51-150 Related area Stay in the area and get more specific
Hot 2-50 Same scene or group Try neighbors, roles, parts, and actions
#1 1 Secret word Start a fresh puzzle

Exact lines shift puzzle to puzzle. Your best rank so far matters more than any fixed band. If a guess beats your best rank so far, you moved closer. If it climbs, you drifted or tested a weak neighbor.

Best openers

Openers map the board. They do not need to win the puzzle. Use broad words that test different meaning areas, then follow the lowest rank. Full lists live in best Contexto starting words.

Opener What it tests If warm, try
animal Living things, pets, nature pet, dog, bird, farm
place Locations and settings home, city, school, park
person Roles and relationships friend, child, teacher, doctor
object Physical things tool, clothes, book, machine
feeling Emotions and states happy, fear, memory, hope
food Meals, ingredients, taste fruit, cook, kitchen, sweet
work Jobs, effort, business job, office, money, team
music Art, sound, performance song, band, concert, artist

Three to five openers is usually enough. Stop opening the moment one rank clearly leads. Dumping ten starters after you already have a warm lead wastes the signal.

Mid-game and late-game rules of thumb

Mid-game is where most players either lock in or wander. Late-game is where big jumps get costly.

Mid-game

  • Dig sideways inside a warm category. If school is strong, try teacher, student, classroom, book, and lesson.
  • Compare against your best rank, not against perfection. A 90 that beat a 320 is a win.
  • Leave a category after two or three related cold follow-ups. One miss can be noise. A streak is a message.
  • Prefer scene words over pure lookalike words. Roles, rooms, tools, and actions often move the rank more than near-matches alone.

Late-game

  • Once you are in low double digits or better, slow down.
  • List five words in the same tiny area as your best guess, then test them in order.
  • Prefer clear words from the scene. Near the top, nurse can beat person, and classroom can beat place.
  • Watch for drifting away from the idea. Sliding from "school building" into "learning in general" can send you into homework or grade when the warm group was a role or a room.

Recovery moves when stuck

Stuck boards usually fall into two patterns. Treat them differently. Longer recovery guides live in how to get unstuck in Contexto.

Stuck pattern What it looks like Recovery move
Cold dead end Best rank still high, follow-ups stay high Full category reset with broad openers
Warm dead end Solid middle or low rank, neighbors stop getting better Try parts, roles, places, and actions around your best guess
False warm One decent rank, then lookalike drift Go back to the best guess and test nearby ideas

Optional Contexto hints help after you have already mapped the board. Use a hint as a small fix, then go back to reading ranks yourself.

Worked mini-example (simple)

No daily spoiler here. Just the shape of a clean run.

Guess Rank pattern What you learn
animal Cold Probably not a living creature
food Cold Probably not a meal or ingredient
place Warm Explore locations
school Warmer Dig into school words
teacher Hot Test roles, rooms, and nearby ideas like student, classroom, lesson

Each guess either opens a category, narrows one, or tests a neighbor. That loop is the whole cheat sheet in action. For a longer win path, see how to win Contexto.

No. The examples stay in everyday categories so you can reuse the method on any daily puzzle without spoilers.

What is the fastest way to use this sheet mid-puzzle?
