Contexto Hints: How to Use Clues Without Spoiling the Puzzle

Use hints as a nudge after your own guesses, not as a shortcut past the fun.

Contexto hints are for the moment you are stuck, not for the moment you open the puzzle. Use a few of your own guesses first. Read the ranks. Then tap hint if you still cannot find the next useful direction.

What Contexto hints are for

A hint is a nudge. It should push you toward a warmer meaning area without handing you the full answer on a plate. The real clue system in Contexto is still the rank after every guess. Hints sit on top of that when your own trail goes cold.

If you treat hints as a first-move cheat, you skip the part that makes the game interesting: building a map of meaning from cold to warm to close. Save them for when you have already learned something and still feel blocked.

When a hint helps vs when it hurts

A hint helps when:

  • You have tried two or three broad categories and everything is still cold.
  • Your best rank is warm, but every nearby follow-up gets worse.
  • You keep circling the same three words and the number refuses to drop.

A hint hurts when:

  • You tap it before guessing anything useful.
  • You use it the second your first starter comes back high.
  • You chase the hint word itself instead of the category it points to.

Cold early ranks are normal. A high number on guess one is information, not failure. Give yourself a chance to pivot before you spend a hint.

Rank reading before you tap hint

Do this checklist first:

  1. Note your best rank so far.
  2. Ask whether your last few guesses improved on that best, stayed flat, or got worse.
  3. If you improved, stay in that cluster for a few more words.
  4. If you got worse twice in a row, switch categories once before you tap hint.
  5. Only then use a hint if you still have no clear next neighborhood.

Ranks tell you direction. Hints tell you when your direction sense is broken. For a deeper read on the numbers themselves, see what Contexto numbers mean.

Best rank Before hinting
150+ Try one more broad category switch
50-150 List five related words and test them
Under 50 Dig into synonyms, parts, places, and roles
Under 10 You are close. One careful guess often beats a hint

How to act on a hint

When you take a hint, do not freeze on the exact word it gives you. Ask what scene or category it lives in.

If the hint points toward something like "hospital," your next guesses should explore that world: doctor, nurse, patient, clinic, medicine. Watch which of those lowers the rank. Then tighten further.

Treat the hint as a new starter, then go back to rank reading. The goal is still rank 1 from your own guesses, with the hint as a course correction.

Common hint mistakes

Spending a hint on guess two because the first starter was cold. Broad openers are supposed to be exploratory.

Ignoring your own warm ranks after the hint arrives. If you already had a 28, do not abandon that cluster just because a hint appeared. Compare both signals.

Guessing near-duplicates after the hint. If music and song both sit in the same warm band, try a different angle like concert, guitar, or band instead of another synonym that says the same thing.

Using every available hint the moment you feel impatient. One well-timed hint beats three early ones that short-circuit your thinking.

Sample stuck-to-solved path

Here is a realistic sequence where a hint earns its keep.

Opening without a hint:

  • animal → 640
  • place → 188
  • feeling → 410

place is the best so far, so you dig:

  • home → 95
  • school → 71
  • office → 120

Still warm-ish, but stuck. You try two more nearby words and the ranks bounce. Now a hint makes sense.

The hint nudges you toward work or jobs. You follow it:

  • work → 34
  • job → 22
  • teacher → 4
  • classroom → 1

You used one hint after real effort, then finished with ranks. That is the right rhythm.

If you want more structure for choosing the next guess without a hint at all, the Contexto solver guide and best starting words both help.

FAQ

Should I use a Contexto hint on my first guess?

No. Make a few smart guesses first so the hint has context to build on. Early cold ranks are normal and useful.

Do hints replace reading the ranks?

No. Ranks are still the main feedback. A hint is a redirect when your own trail stalls.

Are hints free in the app?

Contexto has a built-in hint button. Hint purchases and optional Premium are available if you want more support. You can still play and improve without buying anything.

What if a hint still leaves me stuck?

Stay in the meaning area the hint suggested and test several related words. Compare each new rank to your personal best. If nothing improves after a few tries, switch to an adjacent category instead of burning another hint immediately.

Is using a hint cheating?

Only if it ruins the fun for you. For most players, a late hint is a fair reset when you are spinning. An early hint usually costs you the interesting part of the puzzle.
